The Brothers Grimm vs. Gainesville Poker Regional Tournament
I played in the regional tournament on Saturday at "the G-Spot Lounge". The G-Spot was unbelievable. It was like going to a private lounge, in fact that is exactly what it is. It is a mans paradise. Excellent poker tables, a fully stocked professional bar complete with glass shelving and mirrored walls for storing/displaying the liquor. HUGE HDTV with couches and recliners. Two poker tables (there are probably more tables in the storage room but we only needed two for this night), one by the bar and another in a secluded room. It was not a dingy, smoke-filled man-hole either. It was clean, well decorated (albeit the KISS paraphernalia was a bit scary just because of the sheer volume of it), and comfortable. I immediately felt at ease in the place and the host, "G" was as gracious as could be.
Since I was at this tournament through a special invitation (I was back filling for one of the Brother's Grimm Qualifiers who could not attend), I did not receive the original invitation. On this invitation I guess they explained the format of the tournament. I do not think it would have mattered because I usually only look at the time and directions. So an hour into the tournament I discovered that this was not just a 20 person tournament with 10 representatives from each team. This was actually two tournaments. The format was a "shoot-out", meaning that each table would play an isolated tournament (SNG) and the top four players from each table would then move to the final table, and play for the trophy. The caveat was that you were not taking your accumulated chips with you to the final table, the final table would be a whole new tournament.
I think I over reacted to this news, because I began to play ultra-conservatively. If I only had to make to the top four, there was no point in risking any chips. This kind of play had me bleeding chips through the blinds and ill-advised folds on border line hands that I normally would have called. I made it to the final table, but I was on life support in those last few rounds several times.
My game was messed up at this point. I was happy to get a "reset" and start over with a new stack ($5k). I played aggressive at first pushing my hands and stealing pots, but then the cards just dried up and I could not make a stand anywhere. My last hand was and A4os. The blinds were $600/$300 with a $25 ante. I had $1600 remaining and was 2 off the button with 6 players remaining. I called the blind and everyone folded to the BB who put me all-in. I called of course, and he shows me AA. Like a dagger in my heart. Of course an A hits on the flop and I am out in 6th place.
Next year the tournament will be held on BG soil and we control the format. I can not understand why we would play our tournaments the same in every game of the year and then change the format for the final one that determines the superior league... The brothers Grimm did win though, thanks to some excellent play by Demiko (and some serious mind games I might add) and I am happy about that, but I would not want to play in the format again.
The new 2007 season begins with a Tournament 2/9/2007. Let me know if you want to play.
