Can't sleep - Might as well blog
It’s late and I can’t sleep. The new job is “keeping me up at night” – my former boss would be so proud… But I digress, this is not going to be another rant about work, yes poker is the topic of choice for this forthcoming ramble.
We played a friendly game of NL over the weekend at my mother-in-laws house while celebrating my grandmother-in-law’s 86th birthday. 86, still smokes a pack a day and drinks beer like a construction worker. God bless her soul. NL is too slow for her, she prefers “dealer’s choice” games so about 10 of us retired to the dining room and started a tournament while the rest of the family played follow-the-queen, baseball, and 7-card-stud with 20 wild cards so everyone can play every hand.
*Warning – boring family/kid stuff in the next paragraph
I have blogged this in the past, but it is good to repeat yourself a time or two every now and then, do not try to play poker with children under the age of three running around the house. Our 5 month old (I can’t believe she is 5 months already) was actually great. Early on it was tough going as she screamed bloody murder for an hour, but by 8:00pm she was dancing through dreamland an upstairs bedroom.
My usually very well-behaved 17-month old was as unruly as she had ever been. I can’t blame her really. It was a long holiday weekend and they had been up late every night for fireworks and general carousing. She would not leave my poor wife alone who to my constant amazement was not fazed by this in the least. Early in the game she had to be folded out of several hands because she was chasing our daughter around (one of which was a T7 that I KNOW she would have folded, but she would actually have made a boat 7’s full of 10’s – good thing she doesn’t read this).
She was playing with a screaming Mimi in one arm (who was feasting on her chips to soothe the pain of new teeth arriving) and cards in the other. Eventually she was distracted enough to go visit other people and eventually Nana took her to see fireworks and peace had arrived. My friends who have played at our house or at bentwookie's can picture the scene all too clearly I’m sure.

I played like crap. Actually, I played like I have been playing for about a month now. I am so focused on getting command of the table; I am not being patient and waiting for cards. Pushing top pair too hard, over playing mediocre starting cards (KJ, KQ, AT, etc.), not letting go when I miss the flop on AK. Things I know better than to do, but do anyway. I also find myself overusing the “all-in” play, I never really thought about it until I read that post, but I have to say I am guilty.
My online play is just as bad, except the tables I am choosing to play at let me get away with it so it gives me false confidence. I am playing the ultra-low SNG tournaments (NL) at a prima poker site (bet365) and the quality of player is just pathetic. I got my confidence rocked at the $10 tables on Party and I have not been back since. I have about $80 left in an account there that I am just afraid to touch until I can get some semblance of my confidence back.
Thanks to the wookie for letting me borrow Rounders. It gave me new energy for the game. Greatest poker movie, ever. I just need to start playing against nine guys who only open Oreo cookies next to the ear when they have the nuts.
